Coppicing, crafts and events in the heart of the Lake District.

Based in the spectacular western valleys of Eskdale and Wasdale, Helen Elvin is a coppice worker, greenwood craftsperson and Forest Schools practitioner.

Coppice work

Using traditional coppicing techniques, Helen carefully restores neglected Lakeland woods, improving the habitat for wildlife and restoring the healthy growth of hazel and other small native trees.

Greenwood crafts

While helping the local woodlands to flourish, Helen also uses the cut wood to make traditional hurdle fencing and rustic garden furniture.

Helen is well known for her beautiful willow sculptures and baskets. Inspired by nature, she creates a true menagerie of captivating animal sculptures from dolphins to deer, alongside a unique collection of traditional and contemporary baskets.

Commissions for bespoke items are welcomed. Past requests have included garden gates, dog baskets, Christmas reindeer sculptures, large log seats and eye-catching carved wooden signs.

Take a look at the gallery to see more examples of her work and commissions.

Forest events

With a background in education, Helen loves to share her passion and craftsmanship with others. Her woodland activity days and crafts workshops give both adults and children the chance to discover the joys of the Lakeland woods and learn some new skills.

As a former primary school teacher, education officer and fully qualified Forest Schools Practitioner, Helen has the ideal experience to create safe, fun events for all ages and abilities.

Whether you’re a local school or a small group of friends, please get in touch if you would like to discuss creating an event tailored to your needs.

Seatweaving – cane and rush chair repairs

Helen began her craft work when she had young children by joining a group called Seatweavers who repaired chairs , developing her skills in weaving cane and rush seating.

If you have a chair with a damaged, worn out seat get in touch to have it reseated in natural rushes or cane, cost depends on size of seat.
